Salaries and Wages Commission Trains Staff on Public Sector Ethics and Responsible Service Delivery

National Salaries Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) has called for concerted efforts in upholding the ethics of Public Service and the sanctity of Oath of Secrecy.

The Commission noted that the call became necessary because of the increasing incidents of leakages of official and confidential information on social media by civil servants.

The Chairman, National Salaries Incomes and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta, Esq. stated this at the opening of a Two- Day Capacity Building Workshop ‘’Public Sector Ethics and Accountable Service Delivery For Optimal Institutional Performance and Development’’.

Represented by the Secretary to the Commission, Engr. David I. Nyikyaa, the Chairman stressed that good work ethics is dependent on imbibing punctuality as a habit. Accordingly, the Commission is planning to procure a clocking machine to reinforce the habit.

The Chairman explained that the recent upward review of the Duty Tour Allowances, without a corresponding increase of the Commission’s Overhead budget, it was more cost effective and expedient to arrange the Workshop to cover all staff as an in-house Abuja-based programme.

Nta Esq. therefore, enjoined all staff to understand that the time had come when the emphasis should be on the acquisition of knowledge and skill, rather than money.

Paper presented include-

1.Institutional Development and Value Re-orientation in the Public Services which was delivered by the Director (PPID)

2.Introduction to Code of Ethics for Public Servants, by the Head( Administration)

3.Official Records and Its Management in the Public Service by the Assistant Chief Executive Officer (Registry) and

4.Effects of Corruption on Ethical Standards in the Public Service which was delivered by the Deputy Director (PPID and the Head of ACTU)

Highlights of the event was the presentation of certificates to the participants

In his closing remark, the Secretary to the Commission, Engr. David I. Nyikyaa commended the staff for their full attendance and diligent participation in the training and promised that the Commission would embark on more of such training in the future.
