The National Salaries, Incomes & Wages Commission (NSIWC) was established by Decree 99 of 1993 now referred to as Act Cap N72, Laws of the Federation. Its creation was based on the recommendations made at various times by ad-hoc Commissions or Panels set up by Government from time to time since 1960, to deal with issues relating to salaries and wages of Nigerian workers.

The implementation of the recommendations of such ad-hoc bodies were never fully carried out to enable workers derive full benefits of their work. The Commission is responsible for formulating and implementing pay policies and practices aimed at ensuring fair equitable and affordable pay system in the national economy. The Commission conducts Productivity Measurement and Improvement Schemes in the Federal Public Service. The exercise aims to identify and eliminate waste, where applicable in an organization so as to improve quality of services provided leading to customer/stakeholders’ satisfaction, efficiency and effectiveness in operations, etc.

In line with one of its core functions of ‘examining, streamlining and recommending salary scales applicable to each post in the in the Public Service, the NSIWC embarks on Job Classification. This is a systematic procedure for identifying and classifying existing or emerging jobs into appropriate grade levels occupational groups in the Federal Public Service.

We want to assure our esteemed stakeholders that the Commission will continue to give clarifications of the implementation of Government Pay Policies and Guidelines on Salaries and Wages Administration, this is to ensure smooth Salaries and Wages Administration, as well as industrial harmony with workers being properly remunerated as much as it is practicable. We will also continue to execute other mandates as provided under the NSIWC Act.
